Learning to Find Critical Seconds
Learning what the “Critical Second” is –– and acquiring habits to Find, Solve, and Control it –– is the most important habit for reducing crash exposure. What makes learning to find critical seconds so powerful is the opportunity it provides to receive feedback of success or failure in controlling potential crashes. Most teens and drivers are taught to “look for hazard.” Finding a “hazard” is a rare event, or should be a rare event, without frequent opportunity to receive success. The failures result in crashes, which is a devastating way to learn, and it doesn’t cultivate good habits.
